Writer’s Group

940985_winner_takes_all_4 In my quest to become a better writer, I joined a writer’s group.  I had no idea what to expect, so imagine my surprise when I was hit with the force of the different personalities.

For some reason, I imagined that most writers were shy and introverted.  Not the case with this group.

The Screenwriter- seems only interested in contests and placing once again at the Sundance Film Festival.

The Blowhard- talked a lot about obscure writing terms and how he has been writing for 35 years and “only writes for himself” until someone mentioned getting published and then he revealed that every couple of years or so he looks for an agent.  Doesn’t like getting called out on his stuff.

The Graduate- is more like I thought other writers would be- reserved, but direct when addressing the group.  She didn’t look to be up for much drama.  Maybe because she’s like 22 and bumming at her brothers.

The Artsy Male- the most interesting in the group.  Fun, perky, and funny.  He seems like someone you’d want to hang out with and have a great laugh.

The Funny Lady- she’s been writing her book for the last 13 years, but life has been getting in her way.  Real life, fun life, serious life.  For some reason, I kept imagining her with a cigarette in one hand and a drink in the other telling me funny tales late into the night.  I left with her email address.

Miss Manuscript- sat with her completed novel on her lap the entire meeting.  She would raise it on occasion to make a point, and then talk about how she hates writing dialogue.  She’s all about getting her manuscript ready for publishing.

The Organizer- he’s written for magazines and newspapers and is now ready to try his hand at fiction.  He was quiet, fidgety, and looked like he really just wanted to get back in front of his computer.

I could so relate.  Still trying to decide if I’m going back.
