My Dilemma

1 January 2011 2,453 views 7 Comments

So, I have this commute that’s pretty long. 75 miles one way, to be exact. I LOVE it! It’s on back roads, no traffic, and no lights.

Most people would find it boring, but I enjoy my time alone in the car. I’ve never been a morning person, and I have to be up and rolling for a couple of hours before I start to get into the swing of things. By the time I get to work, I’m ready for whatever the day brings. It’s kind of refreshing. In the past, I used to feel blindsided by the craziness as soon as I walked into the building. Now, if something pops off at the start of the day, I’m up for the challenge.

The long ride home can be just as beneficial. I get to shake off the shit from the day and not bring it home to my family. By the time I get home, the tension has been released and I’m moving into the Chill Zone.

But I don’t do these drives in silence.

And I’m not listening to a lot of talk radio.

No. I have simply become the Queen of Audiobooks.

I know right?! And I’m not even a senior citizen.

I’ve always been somewhat snobby about audiobooks. I’m a reader. And that means reading words on a page (or in my case in the last six months, on my Nook screen). I always thought listening to books was a cop out.

Except, now, I do it every day. For like three hours a day.

My dilemma is this: can I count listening to an audiobook as having read the book?

I’m having real issues with keeping my reading journal because I don’t believe I’ve really read the book.

Help.

Leave a comment and let me know what you think.

In the meantime, I’m just happy to be writing and reading/listening.

Happy New Year!

I just wish I HAD kept track of the many audio books I enjoyed in the car. Yikes. Now, when I see a book by a favorite author, I’m not sure if I’ve read/heard it before.

In the car is OK and acceptable. However, if you bring it in the house to finish it off…that’s not fair.

I have stayed in the car after driving to work for a few minutes to finish hearing audio books on NPR.

    Drive safely.

I say as long as you’re not listening to an abridged version, it counts!

Hey. Happy New Year to you!

I love audio books, but I get too involved in them to concentrate on anything else. For example, when I’m in the house, if the book is not as interesting as I thought it might be, I’ll easily get distracted. In the car, though, it is easier to listen while driving.

Yes, I definitely believe that listening to audio books counts as reading books. I’m an avid reader just like you and I love my hard cover books. The only difference in reading and listening is that when you read it, you get to decide how the characters voices sound. When you listen, someone has already done this for you.

As Mr. Boyd said, though, please be safe while listening and driving.

OMG Chuck- I’ve done the same thing. I even sat and listened in the car one day at lunch because I was near the end. lmao. My staff teased me. They were like, you have an iPod, you could listen in your office. LMAO. I didn’t even think about that because I’m so used to listening in the car.

Hey Suz! No abridged versions here. It’s a long drive.

@P- I do find that when I get engrossed in an audiobook, it makes my trip feel ways shorter than it really is. I truly am not bothered by the amount of time I’m in the car. I don’t listen to them at home. Too much to do. And my family would pitch a fit. lol

I love to read but at the risk of sounding clichéish(not a word, I know) let me quote “SO MANY BOOKS SO LITTLE TIME”, so I’m now officially an audio book junkie, in fact I just published a fan website and my blog is about audio books, I review the listening experience, (mostly romance books).
