Happy Independence Day

As holidays go, Independence Day is a good one.  And while I usually lay low during the holidays (not a big fan of hustle and bustle), I will be mulling over what Independence means in my personal and professional life.  And drawing up a plan.
Why think about something if you aren’t going to do anything about it?

Minor Adjustments

 Happy July.  Whatever.
I’m going through some things.
Took The Girl to Virginia last weekend.  She won’t be coming home in August as usual.  She will be starting high school in VA in the fall.  Much better schools and living year round with her dad for the next four years. Shared parenting in action.  I am now the “holiday/summer” parent.  I never thought I’d say these words, but – It sucks!  I miss her terribly.
Work is work.
Writing is kicking my ass with a capital Kick Ass.  Probably because I’ve been so …

Writer’s Group

In my quest to become a better writer, I joined a writer’s group.  I had no idea what to expect, so imagine my surprise when I was hit with the force of the different personalities.
For some reason, I imagined that most writers were shy and introverted.  Not the case with this group.
The Screenwriter- seems only interested in contests and placing once again at the Sundance Film Festival.
The Blowhard- talked a lot about obscure writing terms and how he has been writing for 35 years and “only writes …

Time Warp

What the hell happened to this week?  Seriously.  I just realized that today is Thursday.  I mean, it just sunk in. And it’s Thursday EVENING, which means the day is pretty much over.
I have not had a week go by this fast since freshman year in college.  They used to let the freshman move in a week before classes started so that they can get “acclimated” to campus.  Of course, they had all this “orientation” stuff scheduled.  Which means that we took tours of buildings by day, and dorm hopped …

Knowing When to Say Thanks

I’m sure you are asking why the pic of support beams.
Because that is what friendship looks like to me.  Don’t spend too much time trying to understand the inner workings of my mind.  You don’t have that kind of time.
All of my friends are special. But today I’m shouting out to Yas, Pam, and The Man. Sometimes you’ve just got to go with the diversion.  Today is that day.
Yas- last week I called to check up on you, and you ended up lifting my spirits and encouraging me to keep …

Open Book…Kinda

A writer writes.  At least that is what I am constantly reminding myself.
And sometimes, they write about their own life issues, as I have been known to do on occasion.
My goal is not to offend, it is simply to tell MY truth or MY story.
Sometimes my story intersects with someone else’s and then I have some decisions to make.  First of all I have to decide if I’m going to tell the story.  Then I have to decide how to tell the story.  And finally, I have to decide when …

And A Child Shall Lead Me…

kicking and screaming into a healthier lifestyle.
The Girl announced last week that she was no longer going eat beef or pork.  This is not the first time.  Somewhere around 2007 she decided that she was going to become a vegetarian.  It lasted about 8 months (way longer than I would have been able to hold out for).  She fell off the wagon quite suddenly.  I came home from work one Friday evening and asked what she wanted for dinner and she said a burger from Burger King.
When I returned …

The Second Time Around

I went to the wedding of my former sister-in-law this weekend. This is her second marriage, and she looked REALLY happy.  And the groom looked REALLY happy.  And it made me think that sometimes when I go to weddings, neither party looks REALLY happy about what they are doing.
It could be that one or both parties are hung over from the bachelor/bachelorette parties.
Or it could be that they are just very serious people.
Or  very nervous people.
But really, when I think about some of the weddings I’ve been to over the …
